Getting to know the magic behind clay
The first part of the session was surprisingly enlightening. We started by exploring different types of clay and how each behaves differently when worked on. It’s fascinating how something as simple as a lump of raw clay can transform into beautiful, functional art after glazing and firing. This introduction also covered basic pottery techniques and the journey clay takes from soft earth to a finished ceramic piece. If you’re curious about the craft, this part sets a great foundation.

Rolling up sleeves to hand-build your own plate
Next, it was time to get our hands dirty, literally! Using high-quality stoneware clay, we learned slab rolling techniques to create the base of our plates. You get to choose between a straight-edged or a scalloped design, which adds a personal touch from the start. I remember feeling a satisfying mix of calm and excitement as my fingers shaped the clay, slowly turning a flat slab into a plate. It’s a simple process but deeply satisfying.

Getting creative with painting and carving
Then came my favorite part, decorating the plate. We used underglazes to paint delicate designs and learned the sgraffito technique, which involves carving patterns into the clay surface to reveal the underlying color. It reminded me of a time when I tried something similar with simple paints, but this was on a living, breathing piece of art. The instructor was patient and encouraging, which made the entire process feel very accessible.

Taking home your handmade treasure — or letting it evolve
Once the artwork is done, you have two options: take your clay creation home as it is or leave it behind for glazing and firing. The latter takes about 4 to 5 weeks, and then your piece is couriered to you. I chose to leave mine for firing because I wanted that glossy finish and durability. Waiting was kind of like waiting for a letter from an old friend , exciting and a little anxious. When it arrived, holding that finished plate felt like holding a story I’d made with my own hands.
And here’s a little gem from an Indian participant I met there: ‘This pottery workshop in Powai was such a refreshing break from my routine. Creating something with clay and then seeing it transformed after firing was magical!’ — Priya, Mumbai
